The Crazies and the Bible

I still can’t believe people can expect the Bible to be literal in its discussion of profound truths that are simply too difficult to translate into Human experience. This isn’t because of the lack of skill of God or the writers of the Bible; but from what are fundamental limitations within human languages and perception. The need to communicate profound truths to lay people from a wide variety of backgrounds makes using symbols and parables inevitable. There is even accepted precedence for this: Jesus himself spoke in parables. I find it especially striking that people expect some strict sense of word for word accuracy when even our scientific text books rely on subtle metaphors and symbols to describe the workings of our World.

this message board was what made me think of this; I couldn’t figure out who was sillier the ones attacking or the ones defending the Bibles accuracy.
