Mothers’ Day is one of the secular days I observe quite ‘religiously’, even if it has become a commercialized guilt-fest, by buying roses for my own Mother and Grandmothers. I think this has a lot to do with the philosophical idea found within Tamil culture that it is the warrior Mother who is responsible for creating and giving birth to the warrior. To me this idea is overlaid with the image that it is often the revolutionary Mothers who gives birth to revolutionary sons, thus creating a new generation of activists. A great example of this is Tupac Amaru Shakur and his own mother, Afeni Shakur, who was a Black Panther.
Here is an interesting post about the origins of Mothers’ Day
